Spotlight on D7930 Global Grant-Supported Project @ Rotary Peacebuilding Summit in Toronto, June 22-23

With funding provided by a Rotary Global Grant submitted by District 7930 in 2016, a non-profit organization is partnering in Zambia with the Rotary Club of Nkwazi and the Zambian Ministries of Education and Health to improve the health care for vulnerable children in the capital city of Lusaka. The school-based health care model trains teachers as community health workers and connects children to the national health care system, so that basic medical care and health education are more effectively and efficiently provided.
Lonnie Hackett, Bowdoin College ‘14, Oxford University ‘18 (Rotary Global Scholar), and founder of Healthy Kids/Brighter Future, is speaking at the Rotary Peacebuilding Summit in Toronto, Canada, on June 22nd. He will discuss HK/BF’s model of school-based health care, and how the program of disease prevention and treatment helps children live healthier and more productive lives. Lonnie visited over twenty-five District 7930 Clubs during Dave Manzi’s year as DG to talk with our Rotarians about this program.

Lonnie was the main speaker at the Rotary Peace Conference in Coventry, England in February 2018, one of six Rotary Presidential Peacebuilding Conferences held around the globe. He was invited to join the main speakers of each of the other five conferences at the Toronto Peacebuilding Summit to discuss Peace Around the World, and how Rotary programs contribute to peace and conflict resolution.

Over the past four years, more than 40,000 children have benefited from this program. District 7930 is submitting a second global grant this summer. Clubs and individuals interested in supporting this exciting opportunity should contact Bob Gravino, Ipswich Rotary, rcgravino@aol.com.
