Rotary District 7930 is pursuing Rotary International President-elect Barry Rassin’s 2018 – 2019 theme of Be the Inspiration by partnering with the Rotary Club of Nkwazi in Zambia on an exciting global grant. Ipswich Rotarians Jim Stone and Bob Gravino traveled to Lusaka, Zambia, in May 2017 to see first-hand the success of this grant that trains classroom teachers as front-line health workers, with the help of District 7930 and 22 District clubs.
District 7930 Rotarians now have another good reason to go to the International Convention in Toronto in June, besides being able to view the Stanley Cup at the National Hockey League Museum. The District’s own Lonnie Hackett has been invited to speak at the Convention on this new model of school-based healthcare to address the challenges facing Zambian school children. He will discuss his healthcare model and the 2016 Global Grant for $123,000 sponsored by District 7930, resulting in better lives for more than 40,000 children.
Healthy Kids/Brighter Future, partnering with Rotary and the Zambian Ministries of Education and Health, is delivering health care to children by educating elementary school teachers to recognize illness in their students and provide them access to government clinics in their communities. By training selected teachers as community health workers and connecting schools to the national health system, the quality of care for students is improved through health education, basic medical care, general health surveillance, and follow-up on students who are absent more than a few days. The result: better health for children, improved school outcomes, and monitoring of children’s wellbeing.
