The project discussed here is by one of newer members, Virginia Jones. What a positive experience!
As members of Rotary, we understand our purpose is to provide service that benefits our communities. I was, as all new members of the Beverly Club are, privileged to receive a $250 stipend for a service program. The stipend is to encourage new members to participate in community support by developing a service project beneficial to the Beverly community.
My first thought in undertaking this project was to draw upon my professional background as an RN or my personal strengths as a yoga teacher, Reiki Master and a Black Belt karate student. But I soon realized that the costs of renting a space in which to implement and advertise such a program would far exceed the $250.
My next move was to the internet where I could familiarize myself with the charities providing many benefits to our residents. There I found the River House. The River House had been a male only shelter that has been transformed into a safe haven for vulnerable women. I found the goals of the River House as stated on their website to be worthy both of support and celebration. These goals are to help the women of River House meet the many challenges they face. Challenges which include behavioral problems, health problems, deep trauma, domestic violence, sex trafficking and of course lack of housing. Also included on the website was a “wish list”. From this list I was thrilled to choose items to help fulfill their material needs such as cleaning products and even more pleased to help support their emotional needs with snacks and games for the children.
I do wish I could have designed a project with more “hands-on” opportunities. But I am pleased to have been able to provide items that will bring a bit of comfort, enjoyment and relaxation to the residents of an organization that is so integral to the health and safety of the women of Beverly, MA.
