The Wakefield Rotary Club hosted its second Father’s Day Fishing Tournament at Lake Quannapowitt on Sunday, June 19th. The free event, open to all ages, welcomed about 25 families fishing for various top spots. Wakefield Rotary Vice-President Gene Mullen explained, “We were thrilled with the turn-out, despite the gloomy weather.” He added, “It was great to see kids with their extended families.” In fact, for many families, this event was their first fishing experience and the perfect opportunity to learn safe and responsible fishing techniques before casting their first line.” Loaner rods were made available thanks to Mass Wildlife and bait was donated by Boats & Motors on North Avenue in Wakefield.Although it took some time, patient anglers began to see lots of action as kids, parents, grandparents and relatives reeled in sunfish, yellow perch and bass. The fish, once measured and recorded by our judges, were released back into the lake. The event concluded with awards for the largest fish caught by category presented to Logan Khodusn for largest bass, Glen the Castmaster for largest perch and Liana Winans for largest sunfish.
The Father’s Day Fishing Derby is part of the club’s on-going efforts to focus on local support during its 100th Year Anniversary celebration; the club will celebrate its centennial on September 28, 2022.
