Paul Tucker, Essex County District Attorney, was the guest speaker at the Lynn Rotary Club on April 6, 2023.  He shared with the Club his path in becoming the District Attorney.  He started in law enforcement as a campus police officer at Salem State University.  He soon joined the Salem Police department as a patrol officer.  He came up through the ranks as detective; chief of detectives; and finally chief of police in 2009.  Along the way he earned a master’s degree in criminal justice as well as a law degree and passing the bar on his first attempt.  In 2014 he left the chief’s position and was elected State Representative, which was followed in 2022 by his election to Essex County District Attorney. 

 

He also shared with the Club some anecdotes from his career with the Salem Force; among them was in 1998 when he was involved in a shoot-out and a hostage situation, stemming from a bank robbery.  Thankfully that situation ended with a release of the young children held hostage and only the robber being injured with a gunshot to the leg.

 

Help make Rotary's Public Image a priority!  A strong and vibrant Public Image is one of 2 proven key tactics for successful and growing clubs -- the other is a large number of service projects.  They go hand-in-hand.  Promote your service projects before and after the event.  Invite the public to participate.  During the event, use banners and signs to promote you as sponsors, and have club brochures or handouts available for participants and passersby.  Make sure you have a call to action so that they can communicate with you.

 

Always include a Call to Action in all of your promotions:  that is, what do you want people to do?  Send email?  Click on a web link?  Register for an event?  Learn more from an informational email address, your club's website or Facebook page, or a specific club member's contact information?

Reading Rotary has exciting news.  We are joining forces with the Rotary Amman Citadel in Jordan in an International Project to combat the increasing problem of obesity in Amman.

 

Two decades ago the obesity rate in Jordan was 27%. Currently, the obesity rate in Jordan is at 35.5% and growing.  This represents the largest increase in obesity rate of any country in the world. It has also led to a 15.4% rate of diabetes and other health issues that their country is unequipped to handle.  Combined with very little emphasis on physical activity and a lack of sporting facilities, the issue is real and trending in the wrong direction.

 

The Rotary Club of Amman has designed a project that addresses the growing problem and will have a sustainable effect on their youth.  This project starts with a healthy living awareness campaign which includes social media, posters, flyers, workshops and lectures. It also includes the organization of local sports and activities. The final step is to construct a public, open-air sports facility or playground complex for local children to play outdoors.

 

Reading Rotary is hosting this fun-filled event on behalf of Pep's Peddlers and Pan Mass Challenge. So, corral all of your friends, put on your best Derby attire, and trot on down to the Wakefield Elks.  Pep's Peddlers' cause is multiple sclerosis.  The Pan Mass Challenge raising funds for cancer.
