Razia Jan is a member and past president of the Rotary Club of Duxbury, MA, District 7950 and founder of the Zabuli Education Center, a private K-12 girls’ school in rural, conservative Afghanistan. The school provides free education as well as meals, shoes, uniforms and coats to more than 430 girls in an area where 90% of the population is illiterate.
How can Rotary better serve you and your communities?
We are introducing a new concept in District 7930 and we hope that it will help the district leadership learn how we can better serve clubs and members in your commitment to Making a Difference!
On Wednesday, November 15, district leadership invites you to attend our first-ever Town Meeting. This will be an open forum for all members to express their ideas and concerns in an attempt to develop programs and tools to help you serve your communities more efficiently and effectively. Or, perhaps, it to share your ideas with others to enhance the impact we make.
The session will start as a open conversation and will transition to round-table discussions about how to answer questions, solve problems or deliver opportunities. Topics will include membership, public image, fundraising, foundation support and the opportunity to share your ideas.
Join us at the McLane Middleton Law Center at 300 Tradecenter in Woburn on the 7th floor in their conference room. Bring a friend from your club and have a great night helping us make Rotary better in our district.
Members of the Gloucester High School Interact Club fanned out across the city on October 27 as they delivered more than 420 lobster rolls sold during the month of October. The annual fundraiser took in $6,400 and netted close to $4,000 for the Club. The students will be making a donation to the American Cancer Society from these proceeds.
The students spent the evening before cleaning the lobster meat and undertaking the monumental task of organizing the delivery routes for the following day. They gathered during the morning of the 27th in the Gloucester High School culinary kitchen to make the lobster rolls and assemble and pack the lunches for delivery for Friday lunchtime. Earlier in the week, students also worked with Club President Julie Geary of Classic Cooks to bake the more than 400 homemade cookies that were part of the lunches.
As part of its literacy mission, the Newburyport Rotary Club distributed 248 dictionaries to third grade elementary school students Newburyport and Salisbury on Tuesday, October 24. We visited each third grade classroom and explained the importance of being able to read and had students look up several words and read their meaning. Each student got to fill in their bookplate with their name so that it would be theirs forever.
The North Reading Community EarlyAct Club completed its first service project of the year with a focus on veterans who are recovering from injury. Students discussed the value of veterans in our community and their role in recognizing their service. The discussion was followed by a writing prompt asking students to each make a card for a veteran thanking them for their service and wishing he or she well. Youth Services Director Amy Luckiewicz noted, “The kids took a lot of time and effort into what they wrote. They wanted to make sure they gave thanks but also demonstrated concern for their well-being.” Students were also encouraged to ask questions, draw a picture, and share some interests. One student wrote, “Thank you veteran! I love my freedom!” Undoubtedly one of the highlights of the project was the sensitivity the students showed. The cards were delivered to Veteran Agent Susan Magner for delivery to hospital-bound veterans. The EarlyAct students would like to thank North Reading Rotarian Lisa Pappas from The Savings Bank and high school students Kylie Ford and Monika Stantcheva for their help with the project

This District Governor leads and supports the clubs in the District by inspiring and motivating them to "Do Good in the World!" All clubs are encouraged to propose suitable candidates who meet the qualifications to serve. One of these requirements is that at the time of taking office, the candidate must have been a past president of a club, completed seven years of membership in one or more clubs, and attend the Governors-elect training seminar and International Assembly in January prior to the year they have been selected to serve.
If you feel that your club has such a leader among your members, one with proven strong leadership skills and decision making, please consider nominating them to help fulfill Rotary's ongoing missions. Nominations are due by November 15, 2017 and the nomination form can be downloaded here!
Applications must be submitted via US Mail or E-mail by November 15, 2017. Please note that the form requires your club secretary to attest that the club is aware of and endorses your application. The candidate should also include a cover letter stating why they are interested in serving as District Governor.
Hamilton Wenham Rotary held a successful sock drive for veterans. At our Veterans’ Day meeting on November 10th, Betsy Manzelli of Hamilton Wenham Rotary presents boxes filled with packages of socks to Jim Nentwig of Santa’s Magic Inc. to be given to hospitalized veterans on Christmas Day.
District Governor Dave Gardner recognized Rockport Rotarian Susan King as a member of the Paul Harris Society with a PHS Chevron and District 7930 pin at the November 2nd Rockport Rotary Club evening meeting. Shown in the photo are Rockport PHS members Bob Gillis and Ingrid Brown, Rockport President-elect Susan King, Rockport President Andy Maddox, and DG Dave Gardner. The Paul Harris Society is a formal recognition program to honor Rotarians who contribute $1,000 or more annually to The Foundation, allowing Rotary to sustain our impact around the world.
