World Polio Zoom Event Oct. 20
In celebration of World Polio Day, District 7930 will host “PolioPLUS and its Impact on Covid & Viral Outbreaks” on October 20th from 7-9 pm via zoom.  The featured speakers are Nancy Barbee and Ina Pinkney.  This event will also set the stage for the return of our Polar Plunge with details forthcoming by DG Terry Curran.

Nancy Barbee is a member of the Rotary Club of Maysville, NC and a Past District Governor of District 7730.  Nancy’s first trip to India to see firsthand the work of The Rotary Foundation was in 2001. She had the opportunity to watch a polio corrective surgery and that is where her dream began. In 2010, she led a team of 35 Rotarians from around the world to India for a National Immunization Day (NID). Since then, hundreds of Rotarians have also experienced the opportunity to provide the polio vaccine in India as part of the nine trips Nancy has led to India. Nancy will speak about her work as an international polio volunteer and how PolioPLUS is helping to stamp out other viruses/diseases including COVID.

A Celebration of our Heroes - Registration is open
Thursday, November 11 will be our annual Rotary Foundation event “A Celebration of Our Heroes” starting at 5:30 PM at the Danversport. The evening will include a social hour, silent auction, dinner, and Paul Harris Fellowship (PHF) presentations.

All Rotary Club have been invited to nominate a hero from their community to present them with a PHF recognition at the event. Candidates could be doctors, nurses, teachers, crossing guards, emergency services personnel, veterans, or anyone else whom the Rotary Club believes to be a community hero. The online nomination form has been sent to Club Presidents earlier this summer, and the nomination deadline is October 11th.

Registration is now open!

Registration is required for this in-person event. We will be adhering to all current Covid-19 regulations to make sure this is a safe event for all Rotarians. Any person not vaccinated will be required to wear a mask, and you may choose to wear a mask even if you are vaccinated, if you are concerned about gatherings in indoor spaces. As you know, the Danversport facility has a very large ballroom, so we are confident that we can have people spaced out sufficiently to ensure a safe dining experience.

Microfinance - Empowering people across the globe

Please join us for this webinar on November 18th at 5:00 PM EDT to look into Microfinance and how we can easily come together to help to empower people around the globe to lift them out of povery by providing them with small loans to support them in buying chickens, buying a sewing machine, fabrics, seeds, and many other things that enable them to be more productive members of their societies.

We will look, in particular, at the non-profit organization Kiva that provides a platform to connect borrowers around the globe - via field partners in their home countries - with lenders in the US and Europe who come togehter to support those loans via crowd-funding.

Microfinance is an important topic for Rotary's area of focus concerning "Growing Local Economies" and, in particular, is a large focus for the Rotary Action Group for Community Economic Development

Reading Rotary Holds Fall Street Faire
In May, as the state relaxed COVID restrictions, the Reading Rotary was met with a challenge. Could they pull of planning the Fall Street Faire in just three months?  Fall Street Faire Co-Chair Gregg Johnson explains, “It was never a question of what we wanted to do. Of course, we wanted to hold the Faire. But it usually takes six months of planning and organization. We were all aware that trying to do it in three months would be hard. But we decided to just go for it and try to pull it off.”  The Faire was held on September 12 from noon to 5 pm.

The team of more than 20 Rotarian and other volunteers mobilized, set up the website, got the word out to vendors and sponsors, and worked with Reading Town officials on logistics. John Feudo, Fall Street Faire Co-Chair said, “We’re lucky that this event was well supported by the Town. We have a long history of working well together. We couldn’t do this without their support and coordination.”
