Register for the World Peace and Understanding Dinner and Showcase
Please don't miss the opportunity to Make a Difference in the conversation about the opioid crisis, or more globally, addiction. Your participation should start with attending the Showcase that will present 15-20 organizations dedicated to reducing the impact that addiction is having on our friends and family, right here in our own backyard. Become familiar with the resources available, connect with parents who have suffered the tragedies of addiction, and even death, and discover ways in which your professional skills can contribute to their mission. There is no cost to attend the Showcase. We hope to see you there!

Immediately following the Showcase, there will be a reception with cash bar where you can develop deeper connections to the professionals who exhibited at the Showcase or with your fellow Rotarians. There will also be a brief presentation by Heidi Heilman about an upcoming Rotary International pilot grant focused on educating students and adults about addiction prevention. This was started by the Rotary Club of Billerica and once approved, will service Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Rotary Clubs will be able to help fund the grant as well as apply to deliver the program to their community.

During dinner, Keynote Speaker Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan will share her views on the entire conversation about diagnosis, addiction, recovery and what we need to do to prevent addiction from rearing its ugly head. Addiction, hunger, homelessness, health care, workforce development and education are all integral parts that need to be resolved if we want to minimize the perils that exist for those who struggle with basic life necessities. Dinner will cost $60. Register here!

Finally, with the funding from Lahey Health, there will be a total of $2,500 in matching funds for up to 10 Rotary Clubs who will be selected to develop, implement and report the impact of a local community service project in this area. This will provide an opportunity to truly Make a Difference in the lives of those who suffer from addiction or to help prevent others from ever experiencing it.

President Ian's Worldwide Environmental Project

How can we beautify our communities and have a positive environmental impact? President Ian Riseley's major environmental initiative is for every Rotarian to plant a tree during this Rotary year. If I were to tell you that the district would be funding this project by providing one 6-8" sapling for every member in every club, and that the club only needs to determine where they would plant the trees, would you be interested in supporting this initiative?

Our goal is to have each club recruit and support a Champion who will work with the local community, from public works to the cemetery department, the school department or any other organization that would love to add beauty, shade and a more healthy environment. There will be three options: Sugar Maples, White Dogwoods and Red Maples. The trees will arrive in early April and will need to be planted within 5-10 days of receipt. Although it will take some work to manage this project, it will enhance the community, all through the power of Rotary.

If you are interested in being a Champion at the club or district level, please email me as soon as possible at djg@boydsdirect.com. Thank you for all you do!

Sessions are highly interactive, with a minimum of lecturing and lots of opportunity to share and experience ideas.  Each session is led by a Rotary leader who has been trained in facilitation techniques that maximize the learning experience.  Most work-shops are limited to 10-15 participants who participate in interactive discussion, role playing and problem solving activities.

Will you be among those who will be part of history as five districts around New England gather at the beautiful Mount Washington Hotel for the year end celebration for the 2017-2018 Rotary year?

There are already 425 registered and we have space for another 100-150, maybe more. Once registered, you can visit the website that manages the Mount Washington properties or check out Airbnb for a host of other options.

Imagine meeting Rotarians and friends from the states and provinces that these district serve, including Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Quebec. The international flair will be similar to the International Convention but on a smaller scale. All of the benefits will be present and a wide array of programming to support you and your club in building the future of Rotary. Keynote speakers, including Ian Riseley, President of Rotary International, and other amazing people who exemplify the Power of One. Come hear and interact with our keynote speakers, participate in active discussion at the roundtable breakouts on Saturday afternoon, package meals in our service project led by youth from our YSE, Interact and Rotaract programs, enjoy the great lineup of entertainment throughout the weekend and mostly, share your passions with other Rotarians who are always Making a Difference.

Healthy Kids/Brighter Future
Lonnie Hackett, the founder and president of Healthy Kids/Brighter Future, will speak at the Rotary Foundation Supporters Dinner as part of the Presidential Peace Building Conference in Coventry, England, February 23 and 24. Lonnie is attending Oxford University as a Rotary Global Scholar, where he is pursuing a degree in public health.

Lonnie, Bowdoin College Class of 2013, has visited many clubs in District 7930 to describe his non-profit, which helps the children in Lusaka, Zambia. Working in the poorest sections of Lusaka, the teachers learn to recognize and treat common childhood illnesses and educate children for better health. The Rotary Club of Brunswick successfully sponsored a Global Grant in 2014, to begin the training of classroom teachers as front-line health workers. A number of District 7930 clubs were partners in this Global Grant. In 2016, District 7930 clubs sponsored a larger Global Grant to continue the work in other schools and compounds in Lusaka.
