Polar Plunge Update

As of Saturday, November 3, 2018, the Polar Plunge has raised $14,692 of the $125k goal for this year's Polar Plunge.

Have you seen the recently added Polar Plunge banner on District 7930's homepage? DG Bob Wood--being the immensely good sport that he is-- has allowed the Polar Plunge team to use him humorously to help promote the plunge.

Rotary District 7930 (eastern Massachusetts & southern New Hampshire) will hold its 9th Annual Polar Plunge to Eradicate Polio on February 9, 2019 (snow date February 16). We will plunge into the frigid waters of the Atlantic Ocean at Long Beach in Gloucester at 11am.

Sign up to plunge, donate to a plunger or be a cheerleader. Your support will make a difference!

All Polar Plunge donations will be matched 2:1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Help us make history! To learn more about Rotary’s fight to eradicate Polio, go to www.endpolio.org.

RYLA: Rotary Youth Leadership Awards

Registration is now open for the 2019 RYLA- Rotary Youth Leadership Awards- weekend on Friday-Sunday, May 10-12, 2019, at Camp Glen Brook in Marlborough, NH.

RYLA is a weekend of discovery designed for high school sophomores and juniors. Designed for teens who have begun to exhibit leadership skills and want to take them to another level, RYLA features indoor and outdoor activities that challenge them to become leaders. The overall program is run by Rotary District 7930, and the entire weekend is carefully planned and facilitated by returning seniors from prior RYLA years. Every aspect of the weekend is intended to ensure a safe and challenging environment in which the participants are free to engage and grow.

Here are the results that some of our graduates have shared...

Increased self-confidence
Improved career skills and knowledge
A unique understanding of leadership and citizenship
Increased awareness of some of the other Rotary Youth Programs, like Interact and Youth Exchange.
An enhanced college application (RYLA has been around since 1961, and is recognized by many colleges and universities for its outstanding leadership development)

District 7930 clubs are invited to sponsor up to five students. The sponsoring club will pay the $325 per student tuition, and student applicants will each pay a $25 registration fee. RYLA applications can be downloaded from the District 7930 website at bit.ly/RYLA2019. Limited spaces are available for the weekend-- clubs are encouraged to start the application process as soon as possible.

Greater Salem Installs Smoke Detectors

The Greater Salem NH Rotary Club was excited to kick off their joint venture with the Red Cross on the Home Fire Campaign on Saturday Oct 20th and 27th. The 20th they worked together with the Red Cross at the Salem NH Fire Dept Open House to sign up residents that needed smoke detectors installed. On the 27th, three of our newest Rotarians helped install 25 smoke detectors and 6 carbon monoxide detectors at 6 homes in Salem. Moving forward we will be working in all five of our communities: Atkinson, Hampstead, Pelham, Salem and Windham. targeting the senior centers and using social media as well to get our word out!

The Home Fire Campaign is a National initiative with the Red Cross, so if you have friends or family throughout the US that might need their help, encourage people to contact their local Red Cross to get scheduled!

Newburyport Trivia Night

The Newburyport Rotary Club will host the 3rd edition of its popular Trivia Night on Thursday, November 15th. Hosted by local Jeopardy! Champion Jill Santopietro Panall, the event will feature 10 rounds of challenging and diverse trivia questions, as we seek to crown the smartest team on the North Shore. The top team will win a cash prize of $250!

Teams of up to 5 players are invited to register by visiting the event page on Facebook or by emailing newburyportrotary@gmail.com to register or for more information. Entry is $25 per person. Food, beverage, and side events will be available.

We had a great time when we did this in April and we're looking forward to another fantastic event!

Gloucester Celebrates Paul Harris Fellows

At a recent luncheon meeting, the Gloucester Rotary Club honored community member Mike Mullen, who has supported the annual Polar Plunge for the past several years, receiving Rotary International's Major Donor award in 2018. The club also recognized Rotarian Michael Sarraf, who received his Paul Harris award this year. Also honored at the meeting were several Rotarians who have received their "plus-1" or more Paul Harris awards. The Gloucester Club is proud of this ongoing commitment to serving our community and our world through support of the Rotary International Foundation.

Increase communication, cooperation, collaboration, performance, and productivity in the workplace. Learn how to put an end to the popular culture inspired generational myths that prevent you from capitalizing on the power of everyone, no matter what generation they are from, currently in your workplace.

This month’s Featured Cause/Charity: Andover’s Downtown Businesses Relief Fund. Many of Andover’s downtown businesses were forced to close for a significant length of time following the Columbia Gas crisis. This month’s cause/charity will be voluntary contributions to a fund established to support these impacted local businesses.

Special Guest: This month’s special guest Ironstone Farm. Ironstone, through its programs Challenge Unlimited and Ironstone Therapy, connects people and horses to improve the quality of life for those participating in the numerous programs there. The Rotary Club of Andover has sponsored many programs there, including one recently for individuals in early recovery from substance abuse and addiction. Other programs service cancer survivors, veterans (with PTSD), and individuals with a wide range of physics, social, cognitive, and other disabilities.

The weekly eBulletin depends on the content provided by clubs, so please submit your stories and we will publish them on the district website and in the next eBulletin. Stories that showcase your club or event should be submitted via the website portal at this link.

The deadline for submitting items for the weekly District 7930 eBulletin is Friday morning in order to be included in the following Monday's edition. If the eBulletin being prepared is getting to be too long and the story submitted is not time-sensitive, we may choose to delay including it until the following week.
