EAT, MEET + PARTY

Fifteen extraordinary teenagers who attended last year's RYLA weekend have signed on to be Senior Facilitators at the 2019 RYLA in May.  Their commitment to sharing this amazing program began this weekend with their first training session.  Over the next four and a half months, these young adults will work with each other and Rotarians to strengthen their leadership skills.  In May, the Senior Facilitators will lead eight teams of Junior Rylarians through a weekend of discovery and fun.

 

Registration is now open for Junior Rylarians.  Each Rotary Club in the District is encouraged to sponsor up to five students for the weekend.  Click here for more information and the Registration form.

New artwork from Brian Murphy, portraying fellow Rotary members, is made of found objects and discarded wood. Mark your calendar for Tuesday 12/18 from 5-7:30pm at Sterling Gallery 306 Cabot Street, Beverly. We will have a “Meet the Portraits” reception. Get to meet the people, in person, who inspired this art. Cards will be available for a small donation to the Beverly Rotary Scholarship Fund, to be signed by Jim Davies, Andrew DeFranza, Lee Yaffa and Rick Mooney.

The Gloucester Rotary Club has produced a beautiful 2019 calendar, featuring scenic photography from local artists.  In addition to the calendar, each purchase enters the buyer into a weekly raffle.  $50 prizes will be drawn each week with two bonus prizes of $500-- one in June and one in December.  Calendars are $25 each, and proceeds from the sale of calendars will be used to support the many projects of the Gloucester Rotary Club.

The Woburn Rotary Club recently honored two special Woburn residents with Paul Harris Awards. Retiring State Representative James J. Dwyer for over 10 years of service at the Mass State House and Kathy Flaherty for her philanthropic contributions to the Woburn community. Mayor Scott Galvin was on hand and presented each with a proclamation from the City of Woburn.

Rotary of Somerville inducts a new member, Jen Atwood, the new director at East Somerville Main Streets whose mission is to improve the life of our community by building investment, connection and pride in the community of East Somerville. East Somerville Main Streets does this by strengthening the role of the East Broadway Business District as a commercial center and by promoting the East Broadway Business District as a remarkable and unique cultural destination, known for celebrating its traditions and heritage and maintaining the community’s diversity. In her prior role, Jen served the state as manager of the Local Cultural Council program at Mass Cultural Council. She is looking forward to focusing her efforts in supporting the local community in her new role. Joining Rotary is important to her both professionally and personally - to continue that ideal of service to one's community through multiple avenues.

The Marblehead Rotary Club is pleased to welcome Linda Sullivan inducted into the club at a recent Thursday luncheon meeting held at the Boston Yacht Club. Marblehead Rotary Club President, Alexander Falk, presided over the induction ceremony.

A graduate of Northeastern University, Sullivan spent the early part of her career working in marketing and customer service on the east and west coasts for the water purification and filtration industry. Several years later, she found her true passion to be the publishing world at Little, Brown and Company in Boston. As Corporate Secretary and Clerk/ Manager of Corporate and Community Affairs, Sullivan was responsible for planning and executing all corporate events as well as building relationships in the Boston community through employee participation in children’s reading events, ESL adult tutoring, mentoring middle-school children and serving meals to the homeless and disadvantaged.

The Engage the Community Program developed in New England has been chosen by the Rotarian Action Group for Addiction Prevention as the premier program for Rotary Clubs to implement in their communities. Based on the brain science of addiction with a focus on tobacco, alcohol, marijuana and opioids, Rotary Clubs will welcome  all stakeholders in their communities to convene and discuss the current status, the response required and action steps to reduce the stigma surrounding addiction. The initiative supports those who are currently committed to addressing and reducing addiction and educates youth and adults about how to reduce exposure to drug use and minimize the harm caused by addictive substances in our communities.
