District Installation Cocktails and Cookout
Installation of District Officers and Club Presidents for 2018-2019

The District Installation dinner will be a little less formal this year. Everyone is invited to celebrate our club and district leadership for the coming year!  Dinner will be served family style, and will be a cookout of beef tips, chicken and all the trimmings. Ceremonies and speeches will be  brief and to the point. Dress code is resort casual – khakis and polos for the guys – comfortable dress for the ladies. No ties! If you have a favorite Rotary shirt you’d like to wear, that might also be appropriate!

Volunteers Needed: District 7930 Rotaplast Mission
A few good Rotarians are needed to fill out the upcoming Rotaract Mission to the Philippines.

Are you still searching to find your “Rotary Moment”?  Maybe  it’s waiting for you in Cebu City.  That’s where the medical mission for cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries that our district supports is going.  We leave on September  28 and head to the Philippines through San Francisco with a group of 25 volunteers. After approximately 10 days and 130 surgeries we come back filled with inspiration and wonder having made a huge impact in the lives of the patients.

Go to the Rotaplast website and see all that this great organization does. If you would like to be part of this mission, send an email to gaterrycurran@gmail.com. If you would like the Rotaplast Committee to come to your club and make a presentation contact GATerryCurran@gmail.com. If your club is ready to make a donation, send a check payable to Rotaplast to: Rotary District 7930, c/o David Boudreau, Institution For Savings, 68 Storey Avenue, Newburyport, MA  01950.
Who Are the 2017-2018 Rotarians of the Year?

The 2017-2018 Rotary year has been one to remember. So much has been accomplished in our communities and around the world. It certainly takes a village to Make a Difference, but often, it is one person who exemplifies what it is to be a Rotarian. This is the person that walks the walk and talks the talk about Service Above Self. You have spoken, and here is the list of Rotarians of the Year for the clubs who participated in the nomination process:

To each of you we owe so much gratitude! You have been there in the trenches doing the work to make the club run smoothly, to guarantee the success of events and service projects, and most importantly to provide an example of what it is to be a Rotarian! You are my heroes for this year. Thank you for all you have done in the service to others!

Each nominee will receive a small token of our appreciation and hopefully a thunderous applause as their Club's Rotarian of the Year at the 2018 Club & District Installation and Cookout. Register here, and be there to support these incredible Rotarians.
Is Rotary Ready to Tackle Addiction Prevention Educations?

In partnership with the Massachusetts Prevention Alliance, the Rotary Club of Newton hosted the premiere launch of the new Rotary Addiction Prevention Seminar: Engage theCommunity. This three-hour multi-district event supported by District 7910 Governor, Karin Gaffney and District 7930 Governor Dave Gardner, brought together 75 stakeholders representing public health, public safety, recovery and grief supporters, family members, clergy, medicine, treatment and private business to learn about a new Rotary Toolkit. The toolkit is designed to engage communities in a discovery and learning experience about the driving forces of addiction that includes brain science and big business profit-driven strategies. The event’s featured guest was Dr. Bertha Madras, of Harvard Medical School, an appointed member of the White House Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis.

Salem Celebrates 100 Years of Service!
The Salem Rotary Club celebrated its 100th birthday at their meeting last Tuesday and installed a commemorative bronze plaque to the exterior of the Hawthorne Hotel, where the Club has met since 1925, to mark the occasion.

“It has been a great privilege of my life to serve as the 100th President of the Rotary Club of Salem,” said Jason Consalvo of Salem Five Bank. “I am honored to serve alongside a group of dedicated leaders. It is my hope that the final months of my term proceed with all the enthusiasm for service, fellowship, and fun that have been a hallmark of the first half of this Rotary year.”

The Club was formed on January 8, 1918, by 22 prominent Salem businessmen at the Roger Conant Inn. The Club challenged the formalities of the time by hosting noon meetings, a time when men traditionally went home for dinner, and by encouraging members to address each other by his first name, an intimacy forbidden at that time. The first officers included President George W. Ashton; Vice President J. Clarke Brown; Secretary Robert W. Hill; and Treasurer Robert P. Butterick. Directors included: S. Fred Smith, Aubrey Nelson, Arthur Palmer, and Lawrence Pedrick. The Club received its charter by Rotary Deputy Governor Lester Winchenbaugh of Boston on April 9, 1918. Women were permitted to join the Club in 1987. Deborah McNulty served as the Club’s first female president for the 1997-1998 year.

Wilmington Supports Literacy Program
The Rotary Club of Wilmington supports the Wilmington Memorial Library’s programs to develop a culture of reading and learning in their community. The club, combined with a District Managed Grant, purchased innovative materials to encourage reading at the elementary and middle school and levels. The project also included the purchase of e-readers, which will help the library support the Wilmington High School summer reading program.
Danvers Rotary Apple Orchard
You could say members of the town's Rotary Club are the Johnny Appleseeds of Danvers. The club recently donated 40 saplings to re-establish the apple orchard at Endicott Park. The hope is to revive apple picking at Endicott Park and eventually also sell the apples at the Danvers Rotary Farmers Market. Previously, only a handful of apple trees remained in the park's back orchard, in the field adjacent to the playground just off Curtis Way, the loop road inside the park. The aging trees had been slowly coming down. The donation was spurred by Rotary International President Ian H.S. Riseley, who challenged every Rotary Club to plant a tree for each of its members by Earth Day 2018. Danvers Rotary President Bill Nolan took up the challenge. He reached out to Christopher Sanborn, the town's director of natural resources and harbormaster, who suggested replanting the orchard. The 40 apple trees cost $3,500. Many of them have already been planted by students at Essex Tech.
