I remember feeling so horribly hot, sweaty and the pains in my legs were horrendous! I felt so achy all over, my neck felt so stiff! That was the day I started a journey working through my fears and physical problems with the help of so many wonderful people. That day, my father carried me into Children’s Hospital and, after being evaluated; I was taken away from my parents to a ward for children with contagious cases of polio. Until then, I had never seen a child in crutches, paralyzed by the ravages of polio. However, that day I entered their world and was one of them. During the 1940’s and 1950’s, the annual number of polio cases in the United States peaked to approximately 58,000 cases a year. Many, showed no symptoms or minor symptoms and quickly recovered. Some of us weren’t as lucky.
The Rotary Club of Chelsea Fundraising Night is coming up soon! "Where Do You Want to Go" raffle and the annual Pot-of-Gold fun filled evening. Our fundraiser supports two of our projects: student scholarships and a “Pantry of Necessities” for homeless schoolchildren. We award $7,500.00 in scholarships to five deserving Chelsea students as they enter college and this year we are launching a “Pantry of Necessities” to provide toiletry items to the Chelsea Public Schools homeless students.
