Fall 2020 Mini-Grants are now open for applications
Today, September 1st, we will start accepting applications for Mini-Grants and I want to invite all Rotary clubs to do a project in one or more of the areas of the EnvironmentMembershipPublic Image, or Diversity/Equity/Inclusion. Projects that touch multiple  areas are encouraged!

The grant is a reimbursement grant with a $200 maximum to each club and only one grant per club. Grants are available on a first come, first served basis until the $3,000 district budget for mini-grants is exhausted.

Robert C Wood Memorial Heroes Celebration 2022
Thursday, November 10th will be our annual Rotary Foundation event, but this year we are rebranding it the “ROBERT C. WOOD MEMORIAL HEROES CELEBRATION” in honor and memory of our friend, the late Past District Governor Bob Wood (2018-19). This event will be starting at 5:30 PM at the Danversport and we hope that many of you will be attending. The evening will include a social hour, silent auction, dinner, and Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) presentations.

All Rotary Club are invited to nominate a hero from their community to present them with a PHF recognition at the event. Candidates could be doctors, nurses, teachers, crossing guards, emergency services personnel, veterans, or anyone else whom the Rotary Club believes to be a community hero. The online nomination form will be sent to Club Presidents this week, and the nomination deadline is October 10th.

We would also like to ask all Rotary Clubs to start thinking about silent auction items: we would ideally like to see items with a minimum value of $200, so that people will be eager to bid high and bid often! All monies raised in the silent auction will directly go to The Rotary Foundation! Details about how to submit the silent auction items will be announced in September.

Rotary Youth Exchange Welcome Picnic 2022
Rotary District Youth Exchange Chair Robert Ford welcomed our four inbound Youth Exchange students for the 2022-23 high school year at our annual Welcome Picnic at Camp Rotary on Sunday, August 28th, where Rotary Youth Exchange program leaders, host families, and students got together to welcome the students to our district and to conduct an initial training session.

District Governor Alexander Falk delivered remarks on the importance of the Rotary Youth Exchange program for Peacebuilding in the World and presented all students with Rotary 2022-23 theme backpacks, as well as baseball caps and Rotary 4-way test coins - encouraging them to use the coins as conversation starters when other people ask them about Rotary.

Our four inbound students this year are (left to right in the photo):
  • Sebas from Colombia hosted by the Swampscott Rotary Club
  • Rasmus from Finland hosted by the Ipswich-Rowley Rotary Club
  • Talia from Uganda hosted by the Marblehead Rotary Club
  • Ada from Switzerland hosted by the North Andover Rotary Club
We are grateful to those four Rotary Clubs for hosting our students and to all volunteers and host families in the Rotary Youth Exchange program in our district!

Honey harvest from the DG beehives
If you want to know why our District Governor cares about pollinator habitat restoration, the answer is very simple: over the last 50 years we have already lost 45% of pollinators worldwide! That is a staggering number!

We all need to come together to help with pollinator habitat restoration, and our DG not only turned his backyard into a pollinator habitat and Monarch butterfly waystation, but he became a beekeeper himself and created an apiary with two beehives in his yard. The location on the Atlantic coast is not ideal, but the two hives are somewhat shielded behind the house and have been thriving this season.

Today, August 31st, was the first day we harvested honey from the hives. We took only 4 frames - because we want the bees to have enough honey to survive the brutal New England winters - and extracted honey from them, yielding about 17 jars of honey.

Shown in this picture is a jar of honey harvested today, with the pollinator habitat in the background.
Women in Rotary Spotlight:  Sheila Clarke
Q: How are you impacted by seeing a woman Rotary International President?

A: I am incredibly pleased that Jennifer Jones is appointed as our first woman Rotary International President. I believe that you cannot be what you cannot see, and this is an especially key step in Rotary demonstrating their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. I am motivated to carry out her mission to create peace and unity, despite our differences, as I lead the impact of the Rotary Club in my community.

-Sheila Clarke, Reading Rotary Club President, 2022-2023.
