The members of the Winchester Rotary Club honored their Past Presidents last week as 25 of them returned for special recognition and local Pass The Gavel ceremonies organized by President Elect Laurie Russell and Past President Jack Kean.
Seated at the head table in accordance with their year of service (from 1974 to 2014!), the returning Past Presidents enjoyed reminiscing with each other followed by a special lunch. After lunch, President Paul Gleason bestowed four Paul Harris Fellowships and conveyed three special recognition awards to retiring committee chairs.
The Past Presidents then stood and literally passed the gavel hand over hand to President Elect Russell. Gavel firmly in hand, she then delivered an inspiring summary of her plans for 2015 – 2016 and, with her characteristic smile, rang the bell to conclude a most enjoyable meeting.

ANDOVER TEEN AWARDED SERVICE ABOVE SELF AWARD
The Rotary District 7930 has named Shannon Manuel of Andover as the recipient of the 2015 Service Above Self Award, a $10k scholarship to help her pursue higher education. Committee Chair Amy Luckiewicz explained, “We had 17 applicants for this award this year. As President of Andover High School’s Interact Club, Shannon led her classmates in a variety of service projects this year. Her application was compelling but her spirit of volunteerism was tangible when we met her. We congratulate Shannon’s family for instilling such a spirit of giving at a young age.”
Manuel credits her well-rounded interests as contributing to her ability to lead. She served as Andover High’s Track and Field Captain and competed in pole vaulting. An avid musician, she was selected to play in the Massachusetts All State Band at Symphony Hall in Boston. She has also served as a basketball and soccer referee, taught swim lessons, and worked at sporting events for the Town of Andover for the past four years. Her future plans include participating in the Wild Dog Triathlon in Bristol, Rhode Island in August.
Ok, that along with Obrigado (thank you) and Batata Frita (French fries) this is my extent of my Portuguese that I picked up in Sao Paulo!
It was an incredible experience to attend and participate at our 2015 Rotary International Convention June 6-9. It was great to see thousands of Rotarians from all over the world come celebrate this past year. There were outstanding plenary sessions including remarks from Gov. Geraldo Alckmin and Fernando Haddad, Mayor of Sao Paulo to RI President Gary Huang and President-elect K.R. “Ravi” Ravindran. Even Dr. Oscar Arias, Former president of Costa Rica and Nobel Peace Laureate.
An overwhelming display of projects displayed at the House of Friendship! As many of you know, I do not dance. I have no rhythm at all, but the music, atmosphere and excitement of Carnival was rocking! The glamor and energy of the Samba parade was very high!
While I was at the Rotary International Convention in Sao Paulo, Brazil, I extended my visit and traveled north to Bel Horizonte, Minas Gerais, to have a reunion with our 2008-2009 GSE Team. Three of them are still in touch, but Rita unfortunately couldn't get time off to come the extra 200k+ down to meet us. Marcello's car broke down the morning of our meeting, but I talked with him by phone, and he is planning a trip to see us in July 2016, bringing along his "hot wife" Ana Paula, and his 4 year old son, Pedro. I was able to meet with Roberto Mendonca, and we exchanged lots of hugs and stories. He has so many good memories of their visit, and asked to be remembered to all who know him!

SPECIAL THANKS TO CAROLE ELLIOTT
The final issue of the District Newsletter provided by Carole Elliott was emailed on Thursday, June 25th. Rotarians from around the district have received this monthly tribute to Rotary and everything our clubs and members do to make the world a better place for all. Carole’s efforts, over many years, assembling and editing the newsletter demonstrates true Service Above Self. This can be a tedious process and often takes 10-15 hours to complete. So, the district leadership, past and present, would like to thank Carole for her years of service as the District Newsletter Editor. Your work will continue to live on within the archives on the district website.
Communications, whether email, text, social media or verbal has evolved to be almost immediate and therefore the way in which the district disseminates news and promotion of events must as well. Starting on July 1, the monthly district newsletter will be replaced by weekly eBulletins just like the ones that you have been receiving in the weeks between newsletter publications. This will allow for more immediate delivery of information on a weekly basis.
EXCELLENCE IN COMMUNITY SERVICE RECOGNITION DINNER
On June 18, 2015 The Rotary Club of West Roxbury and Roslindale, celebrated excellence in community service with a gala to highlight the values of Paul Harris and two local patriarchs. Local business leaders and humanitarians Martin Bligh of the Corrib Pub and the Corrib Foundation and Richard Gormley of Gormley Funeral Home were thanked by bestowing a Paul Harris public service acknowledgment. The dinner was held at the Elks Lodge at 1 Morrell Street this past Thursday evening.

CLUB VISIONING UPDATE
What is a Club Facilitation?
Why should your club participate?
How do we schedule a Vision Facilitation Session?
Club Visioning is a process designed to help Rotary Clubs create their own unique vision and to outline the steps necessary to achieve that vision. The result is a vision designed and endorsed by the club's own members. District 7930 is committed to providing clubs with trained facilitators to help a club process this vision during a visioning event.
The evening consists of a club discussion about how members want their club to develop over the next three to five years in a fun and informative session in a format designed to draw out each members interests and passions. This straightforward process provides the ability to build consensus in each of the key topics in club operations, including membership, service, youth services, fellowship and foundation support among others.
Some of the dialog includes:
What the club stands for in the community
The club's target membership size and demographics in three years
Identification of the club's attributes, challenges and opportunities
Top objectives for each avenue of service, and
Ways to improve the club's leadership development.
Ten district clubs have completed a visioning and the members were excited, engaged and told the visioning team how it will improve their clubs.

ALPHABET SOUP OF ROTARY - ROTARY ACRONYMS
Like many organizations Rotary uses acronyms. Rotary is not unique in using acronyms. It is common in all organizations, big and small. A sports report on the news would take twice as long without the use of acronyms.
There is a time and place for everything and using acronyms is no exception. The whole point of using these abbreviation in your Rotary presentations and writing is to clearly communicate. However, if you misuse or abuse acronyms, you’ll accomplish just the opposite, turning your communications into a baffling cocktail of gobbledygook.
Can you understand these two sentences?
The RRFC suggested the DG ask the DRFC to promote PHFS and EREY to increase DDF to fund a VTT.
The RPIC and RC talked to PEs at PETS about benefits of RLI to understand TRF.
Here is an updated list of Rotary acronyms. GSE and DSG have been retired and we introduced VTT, RPIC and EMGA.

When was the last time you updated your profile on Clubrunner? If you never have or if it has been 6 months since you have done so, please consider reviewing and adding more information and your photo!
It is actually quite easy! Login to either your club's ClubRunner page or the district website at www.rotary7930.org. If you have forgotten your password you can click on "New and existing users: retrieve login and/or reset password. Once you are logged in, you can access the instructions by clicking hereor you can view the online tutorial "How to Edit Profile, Change Password & Upload Photo".
Please add your home and work address and phone numbers, partner/spouse name, both of your birthdays and your anniversary. The date data is important for creating birthday, anniversary and years of service reports. Adding your photo is easy and will help newer club members and or other district members connect your name and face and help build your relationship.

On June 12th we inducted Mary Hoag-Wilkes as our 38th club member. Mary is a retired teacher who recently moved back to the Salem area.
