Can you believe we are already closing in on December? Where does the time go? Perhaps it is that we are very busy making a difference in the lives of so many people? Or is it that we are creating opportunities to improve our communities?
On October 29, President Ray Bastarache welcomed us to the Lynn Rotary Club. Not only did we have a great lunch, but we were impressed by the club’s commitment to membership growth and retention! If you have a chance to speak to Ray, please ask him how they have gained more than a dozen members since July! We had the pleasure of meeting some of the new members of the Lynn Satellite Club and hearing the positive impact the club is doing for the great city of Lynn.
Rotary does a great job with community projects both locally and internationally. Clubs also share this important relationship with their schools, whether elementary, middle or high school. Reading Rotary and President Bob Hayes’s dedication to their community and service to schools is outstanding! I was impressed when hearing Bob and the club discuss all of the upcoming projects they are committed to doing.
December 1, 2015 is this year's GIVING TUESDAY! According to givingtuesday.org, "We have a day for giving thanks. We have two for getting deals. Now, we have #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back. On Tuesday, December 1, 2015, charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give."

The Rotary Club of Wakefield recently welcomed Lieutenant Colonel Bob Driscoll of the Air National Guard at its lunch meeting. The 30-year military veteran leads the local area's emergency response which includes the medical unit of MEMA Region 1. His team is included among a larger unit charged with responding to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive events. Each year, his almost 50-member team serves at the Boston Marathon with roving response experts in an area that covers Hopkington to Brookline. His team can also be activated for natural events such as responding to roof collapses in a snow storm and serve as search and evacuation specialists. Although stationed at Hanscom Air Force Base, his $1.2 million in equipment is securely stored at Camp Curtis Guild in Reading in order to, "be able to quickly respond to an event in the Greater Boston area in six hours or less."
Driscoll also serves as a firefighter in Melrose as well as serving as Chair of the Melrose Veterans Advisory Board. He noted, "The need to support veterans is constant and growing." He thanked the club for supporting local veteran initiatives in Wakefield noting, "The Rotary Club's 'service above self' motto closely matches the core values of the Air Force including integrity, service before self, and excellence in all we do."
Congratulations to our very own Past District Governor John Hall who heads up the SalemFive Commercial Banking division! He was honored by the North Shore Chamber of Commerce, Inc. with the Distinguished Leader Award!
John was District Governor of District 7930 for 2012-13 and the Rotary theme for that year was Engage Rotary - Change Lives. He has had a lifetime of doing just that.
The Burlington Rotary Club participates annually in a Thanksgiving meal food distribution to over 150 needy Burlington families. The program is held at the Burlington UCC Church and combines services by the Burlington Food Pantry, UCC Church staff and Burlington Rotary Club members and families. The 15 pound frozen turkeys for this year's program were provided by the Boston Food Bank where club members picked them up, stored them in a freezer courtesy of Shaws market, and then brought them to the church for this Sunday event.
The young man in the second photo is the grandson of a club member. He pitched right in along with the rest of the crew throughout the afternoon and quickly learned the meaning of the Rotary motto "Service Above Self".
The event lasted from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on November 22nd. The women Rotarian members walked with the food recipients helping them pick out and bag the many different Thanksgiving dinner foods available. The Rotarian men performed their usual "bag boy" duties, helping meal food recipients carry their turkeys and bags of food to their cars.
