The Rotary Club of Gloucester recently collaborated with several local agencies to present a substance misuse prevention and self-care forum to every student at the Gloucester High School.  Over the course of two days, the forum brought together three local organizations, the Police Assisted Addiction and Recovery Initiative (PAARI), Gloucester’s Health Department, and Children’s Friend and Family Services, to provide students with real stories of addiction and recovery, as well as the importance of self-care. 

 

Three recent Gloucester High School graduates, Cody Desmond, Lilly Salah and Christian Maki, who are in recovery, gave students some insight into their struggles through addiction and journey to recovery during a guided conversation with PAARI’s Care Advocate and Outreach Specialist, Tito Rodriguez.  This was followed by a presentation from Children’s Friend and Family who focused more on the prevention side of things, stressing the importance of self-care as an alternative to using substances to manage stress.  Students were provided with an opportunity to ask questions of the panelists and the presentation was followed by a survey, with many students expressing how impactful the presentation was for them and also hoping that other opportunities would arise to invite the speakers back to the high school.

 

This forum was an opportunity for the Rotary Club of Gloucester to provide outreach and education around a topic that has profoundly impacted so many in the Gloucester community.

 

The Special Games are held at the Lynn Vocational Technical Field house and brings together some 30 specialized classroom programs encompassing over 350 students with the full range of diagnosed disabilities. Teachers, classroom aids and about 100 student volunteers from LVTI work with children on the many playful activities set up around the field house. Several Lynn Police officers lead the parade of students and teachers around the facility along with Lynn School Superintendent Dr. Patrick Tutweiller and Police Chief Michael Mageary. Carolyn Cole, a former Rotarian,  sang the National Anthem. Rotarians in attendance to support students were: Steve Upton, Harvey Rowe, Mackie & Ray Bastarache, Diana Moreno, Dick Ruth, Wendy Silva. Rev. Bill Simpson, Brenda Peral and President-elect Bill Reilly.  Lynn Rotarian Pattie Capano coordinated the event with Ms. Nerich.

The 2019 Memorandum of Understanding for club qualification can now be downloaded from the District website. This document must be read and signed by the 2018-2019 president and the president elect. Once signed, it should be scanned and emailed to Foundation Chair Liz Cullen at lizgcullen@yahoo.com.  Completion of this document is required to qualify for any grant from District 7930.

The deadline for submitting items for the weekly District 7930 eBulletin is Friday morning in order to be included in the following Monday's edition.  If the eBulletin being prepared is getting to be too long and the story submitted is not time-sensitive, we may choose to delay including it until the following week.
