World Polio Zoom Event Oct. 20
In celebration of World Polio Day, District 7930 will host “PolioPLUS and its Impact on Covid & Viral Outbreaks” on October 20th from 7-9 pm via zoom.  The featured speakers are Nancy Barbee and Ina Pinkney.  This event will also set the stage for the return of our Polar Plunge with details forthcoming by DG Terry Curran.  Register here to receive Zoom link on the day of the event.

Nancy Barbee is a member of the Rotary Club of Maysville, NC and a Past District Governor of District 7730.  Nancy’s first trip to India to see firsthand the work of The Rotary Foundation was in 2001. She had the opportunity to watch a polio corrective surgery and that is where her dream began. In 2010, she led a team of 35 Rotarians from around the world to India for a National Immunization Day (NID). Since then, hundreds of Rotarians have also experienced the opportunity to provide the polio vaccine in India as part of the nine trips Nancy has led to India. Nancy will speak about her work as an international polio volunteer and how PolioPLUS is helping to stamp out other viruses/diseases including COVID.

Celebrating 100 Summers of Camp
Did you know that we have a gem right here in District 7930? Camp Rotary, located on Stiles Pond in Boxford, MA, is the longest running, consecutive service project of any club! It started back in 1921 when several members of the Lynn club were approached by the secretary of the Lynn YMCA (who happened to be a past president of the Lynn club) with the idea to purchase land that could be used to open up camping opportunities for boys from the Lynn area.

Over the past 100 years, much has changed (the camp is coed; cabins have replaced tents; the facility has continuously been upgraded – most recently with a new, spacious dining hall) but through it all, the club has ensured that the vision of those original founders would continue. This year, after being forced to close for a summer due to COVID, the camp reopened and nearly 1000 campers enjoyed part of their summer making new friends while experiencing a sheltered independence, personal growth and a lot of fun!

The camp’s board of directors have planned a gala event for June 11, 2022 to celebrate the 100th year anniversary. More information on that event, as well as other centennial activities will be coming over the next few months.
Goat Pebble Bingo & Fall Fair
The Belle Isle Rotary had a Fall Fair event for the children and families of East Boston Revere and Winthrop.  We aimed to bring some of the highlights of the Topsfield Fair to our neighbors that may not be able to go to Topsfield for a variety of reasons, we helped subsidize this event by selling squares for Goat Pebble Bingo and the lucky winner was John Francis.

We had baby goats, baby pigs and bunnies as well as a two chickens and two ducks  The kids had a great time hand feeding and getting to sit down and spend time with the small animals, hold them and learn about them.

We also offered treats hot dogs, hot apple cider donuts, popcorn and chocolate milk and lemonade from Peabody's own Dujanski Farm.  It was a real joy to be able to bring a little bit of Fall Fair to our friends and neighbors in the Belle Isle Rotary region and we look forward to having this event again next fall.
Paws for Polio
This is a fun suggestion for all the clubs in our District:

On Sunday October 24th, which is World Polio Day, organize a Paws For Polio walk in your town! This can be a simple but fun event, and won’t take a lot of planning. Find a starting point, take donations for Polio, give out some dog treats and take a walk with friends! This will be good exercise for you and your dog (s), and raise community awareness for Rotary’s mission to eradicate Polio world wide all in one easy package!

Looking for Volunteers!  Imagine a Day without Water.
On October 23, 1-4 pm, Ipswich / Rowley Rotarians are looking for volunteers to help work hands-on-science activities that support watershed education for 5th graders.  This Greenscapes program was cancelled last year due to COVID - https://greenscapes.org/your-school/

The Ipswich River Watershed Association is offering, instead, an afternoon of family activities developed for 5th grade classrooms across the county.  Volunteers are needed to lead / direct a table (total of 8 tables) that has a Greenscapes hands-on watershed activity.
Please email Ann Witzig at aswitzig@gmail.com if you are interested in volunteering Oct. 23, 1 pm-4 pm.  The location will be determined shortly.
Nepal's Great Himalaya Trail Project
Economic and Community Development of Eco-Tourism

Creating successful and sustainable eco-tourism and micro enterprise among extremely poor mountain villages. Build on proven initiatives started in the Makalu and other parts of Nepal over the past 20+ years, harness a proven Appreciative Planning and Action (APA) development methodology along Nepal’s 1000 mile Great Himalaya Trail (GHT)—spanning the entire 500 miles from East to West Nepal.

This proposed Economic Development International Project, supported by District 7930 and Amesbury Rotary, is being designed by Amesbury Rotarians Malcolm (Mac) Odell, Mark Bean, and Sandy Carlisle from the Amesbury Rotary Club, who would love to present this project to your Rotary Club with an awesome PowerPoint presentation.

Please contact Sandy Carlisle (skcarlisle@myfairpoint.net), Mac Odell (malcom.j.odell@gmail.com), or Mark Bean (smarkbean@gmail.com) to set up a date. You can read more about the project in the Northeast PETS House of Friendship.
