2015 has been history-making year in Rotary's efforts to #endpolio. In July, we marked one year since the last case of wild poliovirus was found in Nigeria. According to endpolio.org, this achievement could signal that the world will soon see a polio-free Africa, a major milestone in global public health! In fact, Africa hasn’t seen a new case since August 11, 2014. When Nigeria and the entire African region go three years without a case of polio, World Health Organization will certify them as polio-free! But the good news didn't stop in July. Only 2 months ago, we made polio history with the eradication of the Type 2 strain, and Rotarians in District 7930 can count themselves as part of this achievement. In the past three years alone, members of this district raised a historic $291,960 to this global initiative, and we're not done! This monumental success has happened through a lot of effort and education. I hope you find this special polio edition of the e-newsletter informative and inspiring. Please consider registering today and meet me for the biggest beach party of the winter!

Last year was my first time fundraising and plunging with Rotary! When a Rotarian friend asked us to join her for the plunge, my husband (he was the guy dressed like Buddy the Elf) and I both quickly said yes. We have two daughters and we're grateful that they are both healthy! Not every parent is lucky to have access to healthcare and to preventative life-saving vaccines. We made sure we brought our daughters with us to the plunge because we wanted them to learn about community and coming together for a purpose. Yes, the water was cold. But looking back on it now, all I can remember is the laughter and excitement as the MC told the crowd how many vaccines we had raised!

Thanks to Rotary for making my family feel welcome and we can't wait to see you this January on the beach again!
On January 23, 2016 our district will make history again with our 6th Annual Polar Plunge off of Long Beach in Gloucester. Our goals are simple:

  1. 100% of clubs participate in fundraising or plunging
  2. Raise $125k and earn $250k of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation matched funds
We need your help. Please register today. You can register here or text "joinplunge" to 51555. Be sure to click "join a team" and register under your club's team!

Want to participate but not ready to take the plunge? Simply register and become a "virtual plunger" by fundraising for your club! Want more info on the plunge? Visit our official Polar Plunge web page.

Rotarians are generous in giving their time, talent and treasure. It's key that we continue to give to our Rotary Foundation's programs, including the Annual Fund. So again, this year, we're committed to the Other People's Money, or OPM, Strategy. Instead of reaching into your own pocket, the Plunge Committee is  asking you to ask a friend, neighbor, family or co-worker to sponsor your plunge or virtual plunge. This strategy has been proven to increase awareness of polio eradication and increase fundraising!

Want proof? The number one club for the past 2 years has hit the $20k mark in polio fundraising. How much of that was OPM? Last year it was 75% of their total donations!

For more information on how to process donations and more download the Plunge Instructions and Frequently Asked Questions document.
Social media is the number one way to attract outside donations. Check out these tips to increase your campaign's visibility on social media.

  1. Utilize Giving Tuesday (December 1st). Learn more tips specific for  #givingtuesday here!
  2. Change your profile pic to a photo from your previous plunge or if you're a first-time participant, try taking a "this close" photo.
  3. Thank donors for their gifts by tagging them.
  4. Take a photo of you holding your personal text to donate picture. (Amy's text or bear text photo)
  5. Tell people about why you are supporting the cause in no more than 2 sentences.
