Reflecting on My Experience with Polio
I remember feeling so horribly hot, sweaty and the pains in my legs were horrendous! I felt so achy all over, my neck felt so stiff! That was the day I started a journey working through my fears and physical problems with the help of so many wonderful people. That day, my father carried me into Children’s Hospital and, after being evaluated; I was taken away from my parents to a ward for children with contagious cases of polio. Until then, I had never seen a child in crutches, paralyzed by the ravages of polio. However, that day I entered their world and was one of them. During the 1940’s and 1950’s, the annual number of polio cases in the United States peaked to approximately 58,000 cases a year. Many, showed no symptoms or minor symptoms and quickly recovered. Some of us weren’t as lucky.

2017-2018 Rotary Theme Announced
Rotary Internatioal President-elect Ian Riseley announced the theme for the 2017-2018 Rotary year - Rotary: Making a Difference. How appropriate, as it is what we do every day.

Key elements to his plan for the year are protecting the environment and doing what we can do to curb climate change.

Ian challenged every Rotary club to make a difference by planting a tree for each of its members between the start of the Rotary year on 1 July and Earth Day on 22 April 2018. Trees remove carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the air, which slows global warming.

How Will You Answer the Call for Help?
As Rotarians, we understand what service is about.  Service runs through our veins.  It motivates us get up in the morning.  It feeds our souls.  One small gesture for another's well-being brings us joy beyond measure; often more joy than the person on the receiving end.  Imagine taking that one more step.  Imagine bringing Peace Through Service.

There is an extremely dedicated group of volunteers in Syria who risk their lives daily to pull fellow humans from bombed buildings.  They are called the "White Helmets" and in the past 4 years they have rescued 74,000 men, women and children.  The White Helmets are a non-governmental Syrian Defense group who have consciously decided not to take political sides.  They just want to save the lives of their neighbors.

Join us for the World Peace and Understanding Dinner as we learn more about how they are creating Peace Through Service.

Tell Your Polar Plunge Story with Social Media
Social media is the number one way to attract outside donations, or Other People's Money (OPM). Check out these tips to increase your campaign's visibility on social media.
  1. Change your profile pic to a photo from your previous plunge or if you're a first-time participant, try taking a "this close" photo.
  2. Thank donors for their gifts by tagging them. I like to use a polar bear picture with and thanking them not for the amount of the donation, but for the number of vaccines it provided.
  3. Take a photo of you holding your personal text to donate number.
  4. Tell people about why you are supporting the cause in no more than 2 sentences.
  5. Want more strategies on how to maximize your reach through other media platforms? Check out this sample campaign!
