Rotary only runs on the strength of our volunteers.  Our group of District volunteers always can use new blood with fresh ideas and enthusiasm.

The Wakefield Rotary Club recently completed its One-and-One School Supply Drive to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Stoneham and Wakefield and a school in the Dominican Republic.

This summer, the community was asked to donate two school supply items, one to be kept locally and one to be donated internationally. Wakefield Rotary Club Secretary Suzanne Bowering reported that approximately 230 pounds of school supplies were collected in total including over 250 packs of crayons, 36 reams of paper, 288 notebooks, hundreds of pencils and more.

School supplies were then divided up, with half of them packed into two suitcases headed to Caribbean. “We had planned on hand-carrying two suitcases to the Dominican Republic and filling them to the brim. We hit that goal,” Bowering said. Shortly after the pack up, the Boys & Girls Club supplies were delivered by Rotarian Anthony Guardia to the club. Bowering and Rotarian Amy Luckiewicz brought the two suitcases of supplies to the Dominican Republic and handed them off to a local contact. The Dominican school children will return to school in the next week and the items will be delivered to the teachers. 

Meet Don Dowling, the newly installed president of Marblehead Rotary.  A fun-loving, hardworking, no-nonsense father of two, he brings fresh vitality to our club as one of our youngest members, spicing up our meetups and events with his infectious positive energy and winning attitude.  He has led our club to competitive sports events to raise funds for our signature projects.  A natural athlete, he was captain for many years of our yearly Polar Plunge to End Polio campaign.  He was the perennial crew leader in the duck-tape regatta race to benefit the clean water project in Burkina Faso and co-captain for our Marblehead team in the district softball championships.  Described as the point man and the "glue" in handling the complex logistics of our yearly scholarship fundraising project, the Lobstah Raffle, Don could be seen shuffling around town in his big truck, working tirelessly during the Fourth of July celebration.
