Thursday, November 11 will be our annual Rotary Foundation event “A Celebration of Our Heroes” starting at 5:30 PM at the Danversport. The evening will include a social hour, silent auction, dinner, and Paul Harris Fellowship (PHF) presentations.

All Rotary Club have been invited to nominate a hero from their community to present them with a PHF recognition at the event. Candidates could be doctors, nurses, teachers, crossing guards, emergency services personnel, veterans, or anyone else whom the Rotary Club believes to be a community hero. The online nomination form has been sent to Club Presidents earlier this summer, and the nomination deadline is October 11th.

We would also like to ask all Rotary Clubs to start thinking about silent auction items: we would ideally like to see items with a minimum value of $100, so that people will be eager to bid high! All monies raised in the silent auction will directly go to The Rotary Foundation! Details about how to submit the silent auction items will be announced in September.

 

There will be a program book for the event that will contain the photo and bio for each hero as well as ads from event sponsors and local businesses to help reduce the cost of the event and to support our foundation fund-raising efforts. Here is an update of current ShelterBox response work. Except for Haiti, all our current response work is due to people displaced by conflict. Our work in areas of conflict displacement has twice earned the Nobel Peace Prize nomination. Shelter is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone for peace. At ShelterBox, we work tirelessly each day to provide displaced families with shelter and basic household items. We have also implemented COVID-19 mitigation items in our aid packages. Items such as soap, wash basins and face coverings are helping to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

 

Let this sink in…There are over 3 times as many Rotarians in District 7930 than in the entirety of any of the countries covered in this report. You can help us extend Rotary’s reach.

ShelterBox has a team in Haiti after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit the country on Saturday 14 August. Buildings have been flattened and hospitals already under strain from COVID-19 are overwhelmed. Days later, Tropical Storm Grace dumped more than a foot of rain over some of the worst affected areas. Families face an impossible choice: shelter in their damaged, dangerous homes, or shelter outside at risk of rains and floods. We are partnering with Habitat for Humanity Haiti, who have strong local connections and knowledge of communities. They will help us identify the most vulnerable people in the local communities who need support, and who are not being served by other agencies. We have a ShelterBox team in country who are working closely with Habitat for Humanity Haiti to coordinate assessments, practical training, running distributions and post distribution monitoring activities. Our aid has arrived in Haiti, has passed through customs, and distributions will take place imminently.
