I am very pleased to announce that Elizabeth (Liz) Cullen has accepted the position of District 7930 Foundation Chair 2016 – 2019.
Her commitment, dedication and expertise will be a true asset to our District. In District 7780, Liz was Past District Governor in 2007 – 2008 and also served as District 7780 Foundation Chair. She has been a member of the Rotary Club of Newburyport since 1997 and has served as secretary, treasurer, president, their Interact liaison and foundation chair. In 1993, she received the Newburyport Rotary Club’s President’s Citation for Service Above Self. She has served District 7780 as an Assistant Governor, chaired the District Membership Committee and was a member of District 7780 Conference and Program Chair. In February 2004, she was a member of an NID Team to India. She is a multiple PHF and Benefactor.
Within District 7930, Liz has proven that she is a true team player and will always go above and beyond. Liz has served as Fundraising Chair within the Foundation Committee plus a member of PDG John Hall and PDG Peter Simenon’s Conference Committees while continuing to support Newburyport Rotary Club. Liz was the Chair of 2015 Rotary Zone 24 & 32 Institute, “Getting Fired Up For Rotary” held in Providence, Rhode Island which was a tremendous success. She will bring her commitment, dedication and knowledge of Rotary, Rotary International and entrepreneurial spirit to her role as Foundation Chair. At our original interview, she came prepared with many ideas to move the Foundation Committee forward such as holding Foundation Roadshows as informative question and answer meetings in different area locations within our District plus many more ideas which were impressive to say the least. As a previous entrepreneur myself, I appreciate her understanding that we must serve our members as “customers” who deserve the best we can offer at all times. Her commitment to “help and make the Foundation process easier for our members” is in line with the District Governors Tract to be a support for our clubs in making a difference in our communities, our country and internationally. ​Stoneham Rotarian and District Governor Nominee Dave Gardner introduced the "Route 93/128 Rotary Means Business" chapter for District 7930. The kickoff event was held on November 30 at McLane Middleton's conference center in Woburn. More than forty Rotarians attended the inaugural event and made professional contacts. After cocktails and appetizers, Dave explained the program to the attendees and then introduced Rotarian Andy Winig, who gave a presentation on maximizing results with an elevator speech. After the interactive presentation, the group had another chance to network and practice their elevator speeches before heading home for the night.
"What an amazing night," said Dave. "Forty business people gathered for the first Rotary Means Business meeting at the McLane Middleton Conference Center. There was time to network before and after an engaging presentation on elevator speeches that inspire dialog. Combining skill development and networking with wonderful people is a recipe for success. Thank you all who helped make it successful."
Twenty Rotarians and guests have already responded to the post event survey. The results indicate that most everyone was either very satisfied of extremely satisfied with the event. The guest speaker, Andy Winig was very well received and received a lot of positive comments about his presentation. Ninety-three percent would being someone to a similar event. The quality of the refreshments did not receive a high ranking but that didn't seem to impact the overall experience. The preference for future meetings were Tuesdays first and Mondays second, and six o'clock was by far the preferred starting time. Of all of the possible ideas for future programs, the topics of presentation skills, mentorship, both utilizing a mentor and being a mentor were the top choices. Following closely were collaboration skills, self-assessment, time management and setting goals. In fact, all of the topics showed considerable interest. Now we have to find solid presenters for each of these topics. If you, or someone you know is qualified, please forward me their information.
One of our Global Scholars, here for 2 years studying at Harvard Business School is Akihiko Ito. The Rotary Club of Tokyo - Josai in District 2750 is his host.
He will be studying at Harvard Business School for 2 years, in connection with the medical field. He has been married for one year to his wife, Mina, and she will be joining him for his second year in Cambridge.
Akihiko hopes to learn how to create a service that provides medical information summaries to the general public in Asian countries that will lead to the alleviation of symptoms through improvements in lifestyle and treatment via over-the-counter medicines for those people who cannot rely on doctors. For many parts of society in Asian developing countries who have inadequate medical care, disease prevention and treatment methods can be provided via the internet through locally relevant medical information.

Last Thursday at Marblehead Rotary Club’s weekly luncheon held at the Boston Yacht Club, Jack Attridge (Marblehead Rotary Club) and Jim Nye (Rotary Club of Marblehead Harbor) were honored with Paul Harris Fellows awards for their leadership and work with the Marblehead Interact Club.
Also on-hand to participate and witness the awards ceremony were Craig VanRemoorel, President of the Marblehead Interact Club and Joan Stomatuk, a former educator at Marblehead High School and long-time advisor to the group. The Marblehead Interact Club was founded by (past) Marblehead Rotary Club President Nancy Gwin.
The Interact Club offers Marblehead High School students the opportunity to develop leadership skills through community-based service projects. The club gives students the chance to make a real difference in their community while having fun. Every Interact club carries out two service projects a year: one that helps their school or community and one that promotes international understanding.
The Marblehead Rotary Club engages in numerous ways with Marblehead's youth including its scholarship and campership programs, the Rotary Youth Exchange Program, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, Interact Club for high school students, the annual Easter Egg Hunt, The Rubber Duck Regatta, and Marblehead's Got Talent!

The Burlington High School Interact Rotarians, sponsored by the Burlington Rotary Club, has become the largest club in the High School. They hold a "Sock Drive" each year for veterans at the Bedford Veterans Administration Hospital. Interact Club President Caroline Covino (2nd from left) and three members of her club came to Burlington Rotary's December 4th meeting and are shown holding some of the white athletic socks contributed by Burlington Rotarians at that meeting. Last year the Interact Club's Sock Drive collected over 500 pairs of socks for our veterans and they hope for even more this year.
