Open Door Food Distribution
Manchester-Essex Rotarians volunteered their services to pack and distribute food to 160 households as part of a District Grant. Families received produce, dry goods, fish, meat, specialty items like olive oil, coffee and baking mixes. It was a fabulous spring day to be outside. Manchester-Essex Rotary Club received a matching grant from Rotary District 7930. Our $2,000 investment became $4,000 for the Open Door.

Arlington Rotary Polar Dunk
After learning that the traditional district-wide Polar Plunge event to raise money for the End Polio Now campaign was canceled for 2021 because of COVID-19, the Rotary Club of Arlington decided to organize its own event. The result is the Polar Dunk, which will take place on Saturday, March 13th. Volunteers from the club will be plunged, one by one, into a carefully-scrubbed carnival-grade dunk tank filled with chilly water. The Arlington Media Center will be on hand to record the event for posterity -- which is particularly important this year, because COVID-19 restrictions do not permit the usual crowd of spectators!

If your club hasn't been able to organized its own End Polio Now fundraiser, the Arlington club invites you to sponsor one of our dunkers at the following web page: https://raise.rotary.org/Daniel-Ellard/fundraiser
Texas Disaster Relief:  Rotarians Assist Plumbers
Juan Gallego, Chelsea Rotarian, has sent a brief update on the great need in Texas for disaster relief.

Here is today's message.  Many families are in great need of plumbing repairs. The homes we are fixing need re-piping and that takes lots of work.  It normally takes us 4 to 5 hours to do one house. Lots of the homes are trailer homes, very uncomfortable to work, other homes work are attics but, attics here are very low. The main thing is we are helping these families and we are happy to do it. We are working with organizations like -
4Bresponse.org and The Fuller Center for Disaster Rebuilding (https://fullercenter.org/disaster-rebuilders/)

Will send you pics later.

Our Rotary Women
March is Women's History Month and honors and celebrates the achievements and struggles American women have endured in the United States. Throughout history, American women have faced obstacles in gaining rights not only for themselves but for a variety of other under-represented and disenfranchised groups in America.

I felt it was most appropriate to celebrate the women in Beverly Rotary Club’s history, since it was a long time before women were allowed to be members of the Club and not just “Rotary Anns.”

The 1989 Council on Legislation of Rotary International vote to admit women into Rotary clubs worldwide remains a watershed moment in the history of Rotary.  “My fellow delegates, I would like to remind you that the world of 1989 is very different to the world of 1905. I sincerely believe that Rotary has to adapt itself to a changing world,” said Frank J. Devlyn, who would go on to become RI president in 2000-01. Not all of the members  in the Beverly Rotary Club were happy with this RI decision, but the majority prevailed.

Our first female President, Kim Mannetta, was in office for the 2000-2001 year. Since then, we have had three more women as our Leaders and one more to take the leadership role next year: Jo Broderick, Sarah Macburnie-Liporto, Maureen Trefry and Diane Howard.

The Beverly Rotary Club is a growing club, with 113 members and 40 of them are women. What an accomplishment! So during this month of Women in History, we salute the 40 women who are a part of an outstanding, enthusiastic Beverly Rotary Club! Congratulations on being an amazing part of history!!!

Beverly Turns 100
When it comes to parties, the Beverly Rotary Club sure knows how to throw them, whether it’s in person or remotely. February 24, 2021 was the 100th Birthday of our club. We had a kickoff celebration at our meeting on the night of the 25th. Every member, past and present, had a delivery of a special cupcake with our Birthday logo, a party blower and a copy of our goals this year. A wonderful video recalling the past 100 years was played at our party meeting. State Representative Jerry Parisella and Mayor Michael Cahill both had proclamations for our Club. We were honored with special guests: Betsy Manzelli, Alex Falk, Lori Karas, David Deutsch and Joan Arsenault. We had a champagne toast given by our longest serving member, John Glovsky.  Lastly, we had a “workshop" about bubbly drinks at the end of the celebration. One ongoing activity for the club is to have each member perform at least 100 hours of community service this upcoming year.

We are also planning an event for each month until we have a culminating celebration next February (hopefully all together in person). Some of the monthly plans include a time capsule, scavenger hunt, 100 lights into the sky, an activity with our Interact Club and a special Literacy activity with the schools. We have more in the works but that’s just a tease.....maybe our sister clubs can join us in the fun! Happy Birthday, Beverly Rotary Club!!! Here’s to the next 100!

If you would like to see our video, go to YouTube and look for Beverly Rotary Centennial. I’m sure you will know many people in it!
