Hurricane Dorian Relief Efforts
A message from Jeffry Cadorette, Rotary International Director (2018-20), Rotary Club of Media, PA (District 7450)

On Monday morning, I texted with Past RI President Barry Rassin. While Nassau was spared the full force of Dorian, and he and Esther are fine, other parts of his country are devastated having been dealt a blow with Dorian’s full fury. Dorian is now headed toward the US and other parts of our neighboring  Zones 33 & 34.

Whether you want to help Barry’s District, the Bahamas, or one of the states in the southern part of the US that are awaiting Dorian, this link will give you information on how to do that.

At the bottom of the link is a form telling you additional ways you can donate. The Rotary Foundation Donor Advised Fund (DAF) is set up in North Carolina and is able to make international donations. You can designate where you would like the funds to be directed in the memo portion of the check you write. A representative from each district in Zone 33 & 34 will determine where to allocate the funds. They have experience with this DAF and process having had multiple hurricanes last year. Share this link on social media wherever you deem appropriate.

Beverly Hosts Paddle Board Harbor Cleanup
Two more new members from the Beverly Rotary Club took advantage of the grant offered by our club to do a project in the community on August 17. Matthew Blanchard and Connor Mooney organized an event to clean up trash floating in our ocean and washed up on surrounding beaches. The event took place at Obear Park in Beverly. About twenty people attended and had fun while cleaning up our community waters! Paddleboards and trash bags were provided, but some people brought their own paddleboards. They collected much more trash than they were anticipating. A few things they found in the ocean/surrounding beaches were a lamp, plastic chair, and sink. Great camaraderie with a great goal to help our community!
Boston Rotaract Races 4 Research
Members of Boston Rotaract volunteered at and ran in the annual ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS TDI) Race 4 Research on Sunday, August 18, in Cambridge, MA.

The Race 4 Research is a chip-timed 5K road race around Technology Square, as well as a separate four-mile walk and wheelchair ride along the Charles River. An after party and awards ceremony was held outside the ALS TDI office to celebrate participants finishing the race and walk.

Five Boston Rotaract members ran the 5K. In addition, seven other Rotaractors volunteered, helping the ALS TDI staff set up and break down the race areas. Volunteers also served as course marshalls during the race to help direct runners toward the finish line.

All proceeds benefit the ALS TDI, the first nonprofit bio-tech organization focused toward ALS Research. The 2019 Race 4 Research raised over $39,000, helping bring the ALS TDI closer to a cure for the disease.
Lynn Distributes Food to Families
You can take it to the bank that on the last Saturday of each month, a group of Lynn Rotarians will gather at Salvation Army Headquarters on Franklin Street to distribute food to over 400 Lynn family members. “This is a project we took on back in 2015 when the last food pantry in the city closed,” recalled Lynn President Bill Reilly. "We started distributing food in September, 2015, in the St. Mary’s Church parking lot and did that right through the winter months. It was tough work, not just unloading the huge truck from the Greater Boston Mobile Food Bank, but also carrying out there long rectangular tables from the St. Mary’s High School cafeteria. After a couple of years we moved to Catholic Charities on North Common Street and now we’re at Salvation Army. Some of our members arrive around 6am to help unload but most are here by seven.” Front row l to R: Mackie Bastarache, Diane Reilly, Lorry Willis, Paula Clancy and Claire Price. back row: Bill Reilly, Ray Bastarache, Paul Price, Dan Cahill (Swampscott Rotary) and Steve Upton.
