Have you made your contribution to The Rotary Foundation's Annual Fund-SHARE this year?

 

Again we are asking for players and/or attendees to cheer us on as we play our annual game against Kiwanis in support of Jason Roberts, a baseball league for kids with learning and physical disabilities. The festivities starts at 6 PM on Wednesday, June 11th (rain date Thursday, June 12th) cheering on the young players along with a cookout and then our game starts at 7.

 

Our District Governor Tom Hankard will be attending, and we are encouraging other clubs to join and either play or cheer us on! We will be wearing our new club shirts (red in support of Rotary’s fight against polio).  It should be noted that the shirts in the flyer are for Kiwanis shirts so contributions for the food and for the league can be done separately ($10 to $15 minimum). Reading Rotary presented longtime Reading Rotary member Dick Haggerty with a Paul Harris Fellow Recognition at its May 12 meeting held at Austin Prep. 

 

The Wakefield Rotary Club offers a unique opportunity to its new members through the “Rookie Year Challenge”: each receives $100 of club funds to pursue a charitable project of their choice. The only requirement? The funds must be used in a way that allows the member—and other Rotarians—to actively serve, not simply donate.

When new member Carla Dale joined the club in March, she knew exactly how she wanted to use the funds. As the mother of an adult daughter with developmental disabilities, Carla is deeply aware of the limited recreational opportunities available to individuals like her daughter, Brittany.

“Especially on a Friday or Saturday, it’s hard to find age-appropriate activities for her,” Dale said. Inspired by the Rookie Year Challenge, Carla decided to organize a luau for adult participants of Communitas—a nonprofit that provides individualized, family-centered services to people with developmental disabilities in Wakefield and surrounding communities.
