Haiti Earthquake Disaster Recovery Fund
A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Haiti on Saturday, August 14, 2021, causing widespread destruction in the Caribbean country, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The death toll has risen to more than 2,000 as search and rescue teams are racing to find survivors in collapsed buildings and rubble. At least 6,000 are injured and many more are still missing.

Many Rotarians have asked how they can help, and Rotary International is coordinating global relief efforts through Rotary District 7020, which includes Anguilla, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Jamaica, St. Barth, St Maarten, St Martin, The Bahamas, Turks & Caicos, US Virgin Islands, and Haiti. District 7020 - in cooperation with the Disaster Network of Assistance Rotarian Action Group - has set up the Haiti Earthquake Disaster Recover Fund and is asking for donations. You can donate via PayPal, Credit Card, by wire transfer, or by sending a check. Please click on the flyer on the left for detailed instructions for wire transfer or for mailing check.

What is a 501(c)3 and how to set one up?

Rotary International requires Rotary Clubs to segregate their financial activity between Operations and Charitable Activities. At a minimum, this should be done by utilizing separate bank accounts for operating funds (dues, meal income and expenses, etc.) and charitable activities (donations received and project expenses incurred). However, even with this clear segregation between operations and charitable activities, donations made to Rotary Clubs are generally not tax-deductible, because Rotary Clubs are organized under chapter 501(c)4 of the IRS code.

For this very reason, several Rotary Clubs have successfully created a separate second legal entity, typically called the "Rotary Club of XXX Charitable Foundation" and then applied for section 501(c)3 status with the IRS for that second entity. This setup then allows Rotary Clubs to fund-raise for charitable projects through this charitable non-profit organization and thus provide their donors with the benefits of those donations generally being tax-deductible.

In this Zoom webinar we will discuss in more detail what a 501(c)3 charitable / non-profit entity is, what the minimum requirements are to operate one, and how to set one up. Our speakers, Elizabeth Roth, Esq. and Ed David, CPA - members of the Rotary Club of Greater Salem, NH - are experienced in the process of setting up such entities and consulting with non-profit organizations. We will also have members of Rotary Clubs attending, who have set up their own 501(c)3 charitable entity in the past, and can speak about their experience and results.

The webinar will be held on Thursday, September 16, 2021, at 6:00 PM on Zoom. Please click here to register for the event. The Zoom link will be sent to all registrants on the day of the event.

Lynn Partners with Salvation Army on School Supply Drive
Several Lynn Rotarians, as well as Assistant Governor Peter Majane, supported Lynn’s Salvation Army Captain Kevin Johnson with its drive for school supplies for students returning to school in the fall. The annual campaign is known as Stuff the Bus! The drive was conducted August 6th thru the 8th. This is the third year that the Lynn Club assisted in this project.

The Rotarians distributed flyers to people entering Walmarts in Lynn and Saugus asking if they could buy much needed schools supplies and donate them to the Salvation Army. There were bins at the store exit where they could place the items. In one three hour shift of distributing flyers, 6 large storage bins were full of donated supplies. The Rotarians were there for 4 three hour shifts and similar results were seen in all shifts. It helped that Walmart had several aisle of supplies available, many at a discounted price. The donated supplies will be put in backpacks and distributed to school children later in August; it is an annual event the children look forward to.

If you were unable to donate supplies, you may contribute funds to the Salvation Army by mailing a check to 1 Franklin Street, Lynn Mass. 01901

The Rotarians assisting in the distribution were: Pater Majane, Rotary District 7930 Assistant Governor; Ray Bastarache, Lynn Rotary Club President; Alex Sanchez and Bill Reilly both members of the Lynn Club.

Lynnfield Sponsors Concerts Honoring First Responders
The Lynnfield Rotary Club recently held their annual (except for last year during COVID) Concerts on the Common. In addition to bringing in some terrific musicians for everyone to enjoy, the club also awarded two $2,500 cash prizes to local nurses as part of a raffle fundraiser that raised over $14,000.

As club President Jack Moynihan shares “Lynnfield Rotary created the raffle in order to honor the first responders, doctors and nurses that have served our communities selflessly over the past year. We are thrilled that two nurses won. They deserve every accolade we could give them.”
Wakefield Rotary Returns Home
The Wakefield Rotary Club recently returned to his “home” at Brightview Senior Living on Crescent Street. On Tuesday, August 17th, the club moved offline and returned to in-person meetings after over a year of online meetings. Although there were less handshakes than usual at a meeting, club members were thrilled to see each other in person. Past President Mario Portillo shared, “After a year and a half of Zoom meetings, which I was grateful we did to stay active, it was wonderful to meet face to face again, share a meal and discuss how we can be of more impactful service during a time of great need.”

In preparation for the transition back, Wakefield Rotary Club President Bruce Donovan met with Brightview staff to establish safety protocols. Each fully vaccinated member is allowed to meet in the meeting room after providing their vaccination card, an arrival check-in, and a temperature check. Masks will remain in place in common areas of the facility.
