Be the Inspiration
West Point Cadet Awarded Global Grant Scholarship
Seamus Matlack, who will graduate from the United States Military Academy later this month, has been chosen to represent District 7930 as our 2018-2019 Global Scholar in the Rotary Foundation’s Area of Focus of Peace and Conflict Resolution.

Seamus, a native of Boston, will pursue a Master’s of Science Degree in Defense, Diplomacy and Development at Durham University in England. In addition to his outstanding academic record, Seamus has had on the ground experience in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, where he worked with refugees from Afghanistan and Iran and co-taught a debate class. Because of his knowledge of Farsi, he was able to converse with village elders and community leaders who rarely have an opportunity to interact directly with English speaking Westerners.

The Durham University Master’s Program provides specific expertise in conflict prevention and sustainable peace, conflict intervention, and post conflict reconstruction as well as diplomacy and peace building. The thrust of this Master’s program is how to include and incorporate diverse members of local communities into peace keeping operations.

The US Army has recognized the need to be conflict resolvers and peace builders while being soldiers. Anti-terrorist campaigns are now based on working within communities rather battle tactics. The program allowing West Point graduates to pursue a Master’s Degree between graduation and military service is relatively new. Seamus, with his expertise in conflict prevention and resolution, will be in the vanguard of this peace initiative.

Fight Addiction in Your Community
Please join us to learn how YOU can help fight addiction in your community.

Tuesday, May 29th 6pm – 9pm
The Price Center
27 Christina Street
Newton, MA 02461

Objectives of the Seminar

  • Learn about the driving forces of addiction, and how to raise awareness and initiate change that will effectively work to reduce rates of addiction.
  • Collaborate with other community members and professionals on how to prevent addiction.
  • Find out how to replicate this seminar in your own community.
Rotary understands that addiction, like polio, is a preventable global disease. Rotarians in clubs across the country are mobilizing to bring solutions to the epidemic. This program is the launch of a new initiative to unite Rotary Clubs, the community, the public health sector and drug prevention specialists to raise awareness about what perpetuates addiction and about ways to be part of the solution.

The short, interactive seminar has been designed for easy replication and scalability for Rotary Clubs, individuals, and community organizations across the country to deliver in their communities and regions.

This program is designed for anyone in the community who is interested in taking action to reduce drug use and addiction.
This program is hosted by the Rotary Club of Newton.

I Am Because We Are
This year's RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) was this past weekend and it was an amazing weekend!

Fifty first time high school participants joined with 23 high school facilitators and a dozen or so Rotarians and Rotaractors at the beautiful Camp Glen Brook in Marlborough, NH, for 48 hours of learning, leadership, fellowship and down right fun!  This year's theme (chosen by the high school facilitators during their training) was I Am Because We Are.

Thank you to the many Rotary clubs and members who worked together to provide this a great weekend for our future leaders.  These young adults are amazing!

2018 Rotary Summit Snapshot
Make Positive Impact
Through Caring Service
Powered by You!

The 2018 Rotary Summit at Mount Washington brought together over 625 Rotarians from five Rotary Districts covering New England and Quebec over the May 4-6th weekend. Our theme for the Summit was
Make Positive Impact Through Caring Service Powered by You!  This was a unique opportunity combining a stellar venue, inspirational speakers, informative breakout sessions,  a food packaging project, youth programming, delicious food, stellar entertainment and absolutely amazing fellowship.

Essentially this is what we do every day. But how can we make a bigger difference? How do we Finish Strong? Whether you attended the Summit or not, there is a message that has been resounding throughout our district and beyond all year. If we collaborate with our members, our community, other clubs and districts, our community and others who share our commitment, we can and will accomplish so much more. As we approach the final goal of polio eradication, we know that when Rotary commits to a goal, even with obstacles that would deter others, we will prevail. How will you find and act on your passion, reap the personal rewards of Doing Good in the World and bring health and happiness to those around you, locally or globally.

Lynn Rotarians at My Brother’s Table
If it's the first Monday of the month, you can take it to the bank that a group of Lynn Rotarians can be found at My Brother’s Table Soup Kitchen on Willow Street in Lynn serving meals, washing dishes and waiting on table for disabled patrons. Since July of 2015, Lynn Rotarians have committed to volunteering at The Table on the first Monday of each month and have not wavered on that commitment. “These patrons are our neighbors and need our help,” said Club President Steve Upton. “We enjoy making their day a little better. I can always count on a solid group of 6-9 Rotarians to step up on Mondays.”
Ipswich Loses a Leader
The Rotary Club of Ipswich gave a farewell sendoff to club member Bob Wicks on April 19th. Bob and his wife, Debbie, have relocated to North Brookfield, Massachusetts.

Bob joined Ipswich Rotary in 2005 and served as club president, president-elect, vice president and member of the board of directors. Club service included editor of the weekly e-newsletter, Latchstring (3 years); website, ClubRunner, and Facebook administrator; club secretary (4 years); and public relations chair. Bob’s emphasis on leadership and member development during his term as Club President (2011–2012) encouraged others to do the same. He mentored his successors and helped others to develop skills to prepare for leadership positions. His wise counsel included tips on recruitment of new members and retention of existing membership through involvement in club activities and community service.

Following his club presidency, Bob used his experience and talents as an assistant governor, serving eleven district clubs as AG over a six year period: Gloucester, Manchester-Essex, Rockport, Hamilton-Wenham, Newburyport, Amesbury, Greater Salem, Lynnfield, North Andover, Saugus and Winthrop.

Bob Wicks is a model of what embodies the best in Rotary. He sees a world that can be better and where he can make a difference; that his actions and those of others have created lasting change in the world, in our communities, and in ourselves.

Ipswich Rotary and District 7930 will miss him and his ability to Make A Difference.
