Francesco Arezzo Named RI President
Posted by Tom Hankard on Jun. 15, 2025
In moments of change the strength and resilience of our Rotary family shine brightest. Following the unexpected resignation of Mário César Martins de Camargo, the Rotary International Board moved swiftly and thoughtfully, in accordance with our bylaws, to ensure continuity in our mission and leadership.

Francesco Arezzo, a member of the Rotary Club of Ragusa, Italy, has been selected by the Board of Directors to become Rotary International’s president for 2025-26. Arezzo will become president on 1 July.

The Board conducted a special session following the unexpected resignation of RI President-elect Mário César Martins de Camargo on 8 June. Guided by the RI code and policies, the Board selected the new president-elect from a pool of candidates who were considered by the Nominating Committee for President of Rotary International in August 2023.

Share Your Changeover Stories
Posted by Tim Kelley on Jun. 13, 2025

Share stories of your Club changeover festivities!

Share with your local news outlets, webpages, club websites and social media details with photos of your new leadership.  This is an important way to get your club's Public Image before your own local community.

A strong and vibrant Public Image is one proven key tactics for successful and growing clubs -- the other is a large number of service projects.  Effective Public Image helps expand your reach and artfully tell compelling stories that demonstrate Rotarians as people of action.   The Public Image Committee’s role is to help clubs to have a robust media and social media strategy, an up-to-date website and an engaging online presence in their local communities.

Attached here is a sample draft press release for local news outlets.  Always include a photo when sending out a press release.

Parkway Supports Challenger League
Posted by Tim Kelley on Jun. 13, 2025
On June 11th the Parkway Rotary Club battled the Kiwanis Club of Roslinday/West Roxbury to raise funds in support of the Jason Roberts Challenger League, a baseball league for youths with learning and physical disabilities.

The Challenger players played the opening game with the Rotary-Kiwanis game following.  Both teams were packed with ringers including several Buddies to the Challenger players.  The games were held at the Ohrenberger School in West Roxbury.  Volunteers provided a cookout dinner for the youth players and attendees.

On hand to support the event were our own District Governor Tom Hankard along with the Kiwanis Governor Kristin Holden.  The funds raised from both organizations were designated to the Jason Roberts League.

Special acknowledgment to Parkway President and team manager Ray Fitzgerald for organizing and gathering up the players.

Ipswich-Rowley Honors Senior Citizens
Posted by Bob Wicks on Jun. 02, 2025
The Ascension Church Hall in Ipswich was once again blooming this week with colorful tablecloths, floral centerpieces, and lots of smiling faces. The event was the annual Senior Lunch, Rotary’s gift to its senior citizens. The event is co-sponsored by the Ipswich Council on Aging.

A dozen students from Ipswich High School Interact, including our sponsored Rotary Exchange Student Joao Alfonso, were on hand to cheerfully engage and serve our guests.

Music was provided by The Journeymen, a local band who regaled the diners with fun and nostalgic tunes from a variety of eras. Following lunch, the celebration continued with students and seniors dancing to tunes such as ‘Sweet Caroline’.

Henry's Catering served up their yummy chicken pot pie, which was so popular it sold out! Filling out the menu was a well-prepared garden salad, green beans, and assorted beverages. To cap off this wonderful feast, Interact served a delicious chocolate and vanilla cake.

Wakefield Luau for Adults with Developmental Disabilities

Posted by Amy Luckiewicz on May 29, 2025
The Wakefield Rotary Club offers a unique opportunity to its new members through the “Rookie Year Challenge”: each receives $100 of club funds to pursue a charitable project of their choice. The only requirement? The funds must be used in a way that allows the member—and other Rotarians—to actively serve, not simply donate.

When new member Carla Dale joined the club in March, she knew exactly how she wanted to use the funds. As the mother of an adult daughter with developmental disabilities, Carla is deeply aware of the limited recreational opportunities available to individuals like her daughter, Brittany.

“Especially on a Friday or Saturday, it’s hard to find age-appropriate activities for her,” Dale said. Inspired by the Rookie Year Challenge, Carla decided to organize a luau for adult participants of Communitas—a nonprofit that provides individualized, family-centered services to people with developmental disabilities in Wakefield and surrounding communities.

Polio Plus Presentation at Danvers
Posted by John Somes on May 27, 2025
Danvers Rotary Club member Philip Wilson brought the impact of polio to life with a description of his life after being paralyzed, unable to use his arms and left hand, at the age of eight. His presentation, both dramatic and humorous, helped to reconnect us to the American epidemics of the 1940s and 50s. Polio occurred so long ago that now it’s only a word and no longer carries the dread and fear it once did.

Beyond describing his own life, Philip speaks to the world eradication of polio, its infectious nature, Rotary funding, international funding, American funding, the safety and effectiveness of the polio vaccines, and more. Through Polio Plus, Rotary has led the world making a remarkable commitment to world health.

Philip is available to speak on PolioPlus at your club meeting.  He can be reached at: wilsonphilipe@Gmail.com or 201-956-8509.  Pictured here:  Philip Wison, Pooja Singla (District Governor Elect), Rich Vincent (Danvers Rotary President).
Supporting the Annual Fund
Posted by Joan Kelly Arsenault and Tim Kelley on May 23, 2025
Contributions to The Rotary Foundation support efforts to build stronger, healthier, and more peaceful communities. The Foundation's work would not be possible without the financial support of members and friends of Rotary.

Why give?  You can feel good about giving to Rotary. Our Foundation is a world-class organization that is active in nearly every country and takes the stewardship of its funds very seriously. More than 90% of every donation is spent on our service projects, programs, scholarships, and operations.

The Rotary Foundation is recognized as one of the most effective and well-managed charitable organizations in the world, with 13 consecutive four-star ratings from Charity Navigator and a grade of A+ from Charity Watch.

Your contributions make it possible for The Rotary Foundation to offer a variety of grants that help fund local and international humanitarian projects, programs, scholarships, and vocational training teams. Through those, you support peacebuilding and conflict prevention; disease prevention and treatment; water, sanitation, and hygiene; maternal and child health; basic education and literacy; community economic development; and the environment.

Parkway Rotary vs. Kiwanis Softball to Benefit Challenger League
Posted by Ray Fitzgerald on May 21, 2025
Again we are asking for players and/or attendees to cheer us on as we play our annual game against Kiwanis in support of Jason Roberts, a baseball league for kids with learning and physical disabilities. The festivities starts at 6 PM on Wednesday, June 11th (rain date Thursday, June 12th) cheering on the young players along with a cookout and then our game starts at 7.

Our District Governor Tom Hankard will be attending, and we are encouraging other clubs to join and either play or cheer us on! We will be wearing our new club shirts (red in support of Rotary’s fight against polio).  It should be noted that the shirts in the flyer are for Kiwanis shirts so contributions for the food and for the league can be done separately ($10 to $15 minimum). If you need more information please contact Ray Fitzgerald, Club President and team manager.

Celebrating and Thriving – Engaging Speakers Address Ipswich-Rowley

Posted by Bob Wicks on May 19, 2025
At our meeting last Thursday morning, Ipswich-Rowley Rotarians and guests were treated to an unusual double speaker program. Both sessions were fun and enlightening.

Joao Alfonso, our 2024-25 inbound Rotary Youth Exchange student from Brazil, entertained and informed us with a tradition that helps define Brazilian culture, the cultural phenomenon of Carnaval. Running from the Friday before Lent to Ash Wednesday, Carnaval is a major driver of the Brazilian economy, attracting over 46 million participants and generating just under $2 billion (US) dollars annually.

The celebration traces its roots to the Portuguese colonial period when settlers brought the “pre-Lenten tradition of ‘Entrudo’, a festival of street games, water fights, and general revelry. Over time, these festivities merged with African cultural influences, especially rhythms and dances brought by enslaved Africans, helping to shape the early forms of samba. Today, Carnaval is a symbol of Brazilian identity, celebrated in diverse styles across the country – from the glamorous parades in Rio to the street blocos in Salvador and Recife.”

Meet Roger, Partially Funded by District Grant

The Arlington Police Department is thrilled to introduce the latest member of their team.
Roger has already become a beloved member of the department. His presence at the station brings joy, as everyone is eager to hold him, pet him, and spend a few moments with him. His arrival instantly brings smiles to our faces.

It's often said that dogs can greatly reduce stress, anxiety, and tension, and Roger has proven this to be true in his short time at APD!

Arlington Rotary Club and a matching grant from Rotary District 7930 funded Roger's acquisition and training.

Success in Philippines Rotaplast Mission

Posted by Terry Rezendes Curran on May 04, 2025
From March 8 through March 22 a team from District 7930 left to volunteer on the District sponsored Rotaplast mission to the Philippines.  This was District 7930's 20th anniversary mission.  Rotaplast missions provides free reconstructive surgery for children with cleft lip and palate anomalies in developing countries.

We met at the San Francisco Airport on Saturday, March 8 at 8:00 pm to register for the flights and claim the supply and equipment boxes that accompanied us.  At 11:30 pm we boarded the 15-hour flight that would take us to Taipei, Taiwan and then onto Cebu Island in the Philippines.

We were greeted by the Rotarians of the Cebu Port Centre Club, gathering our boxes and securing our luggage for the trip to our hotel.  Once there they celebrated our arrival with a luncheon and introduced themselves to us. The next morning (and every morning thereafter) they arrived with 4 vans to transport our volunteers to the Seventh Day Adventist/Miller Hospital. The first day we unpacked boxes with equipment and supplies.  The next day we did the clinic, where we registered 107 patients to possibly be seen during the mission. The next day we were up and running and the surgeries started.
